Do you have varicose veins or spider veins?

Are you considering having them removed for a special occasion?

Congratulations! Deciding to have your painful or unsightly veins treated is a great step towards feeling more comfortable, more confident, and looking better in the future. It’s not, however, going to be an instant fix.

Modern vein treatments are far superior to what was available even a decade ago, thanks to modern medical innovation and specialist vein doctors who work hard to master their craft. While it’s true that when you have a modern vein removal procedure, there is very little downtime, many people are not aware that it can still take some time for the treated veins to fade. Many people expect that it happens overnight. This can result in disappointment or dismay if you’ve scheduled your procedure in anticipation of a special occasion soon thereafter. You’re much better to have your procedure completed up to six months before revealing your new, refreshed legs.

Vein Treatments – Not an Instant Fix

It takes time after the vein removal procedure to see the full effects of the vein treatment – your veins will not fade overnight, though some people do begin to see visible results within a few days, especially if they had spider veins treated.

Although there is very little physical downtime following the vein removal procedure, many people are unaware that it can take some time for the veins to fade and the aesthetic result to be complete. While some may see changes within a few days, particularly if they have spider veins, vein treatments take several months for the cosmetic effects to be fully realised.

This is why it’s advisable to get your veins treated in the cooler months so that, by the following late spring and summer, you will be able to enjoy the benefits of fully-recovered, vein-free legs.

Vein Treatments at Crows Nest Vein Clinic

Here at Crows Nest Vein Clinic, Dr Nicole James provides an array of vein treatment options. Dr James will assess your unique case and recommend the most suitable treatment solution for you.

  • Endovenous Laser Ablation – this is a vein removal procedure that uses laser light to heat and destroy the internal vein wall. It is suitable for large, straight varicose veins and is guided with ultrasound. It is a fast, minimally-invasive procedure which permanently seals the vein, and is followed within a day or so by a sclerotherapy session to complete the treatment.
  • Ultrasound-Guided Sclerotherapy – this vein treatment procedure blocks the blood flow into varicose veins by injecting a sclerosing agent that induces an inflammatory response in the vein. It enables long-term symptom relief but leaves the vein in place.
  • Microsclerotherapy – is a vein treatment which treats reticular veins and spider veins. Rather than using ultrasound, a magnifying light is used and tiny veins are injected with a sclerosing agent.
  • VenaBlock – is a medical-grade glue which is injected to instantly collapse and permanently seal off a diseased vein. Its results are similar to that of Endovenous Laser Ablation.

Vein Removal – Recovery Time

You are encouraged to walk right after having your veins treated with us, and while you will possibly have some bruising develop, this will fade over the next couple of weeks. You will be required to wear compression stockings for two weeks. Yet your true recovery has just begun…

Within a couple of weeks after vein treatment, the veins become hard, lumpy and tender. This is a result if the vein walls beginning to inflame and stick together. You may also experience bruising and some pigmentation on the skin. This is due to the haem-pigment leaking out of the destroyed red blood cells. It is perfectly normal, expected, and nothing to worry about.

The veins that have been treated can remain hard and lumpy for up to three months or so. After this time, the body starts to recognise them as a foreign object and will absorb them so that they ultimately disappear. The staining on the skin, however, can last for up to six months or, for some people, even up to a year. Rest assured that this will eventually disappear completely.

Don’t leave your vein removal treatment too late to enjoy the benefits next summer! Autumn and winter are by far the best time to have your veins removed – your vein removal recovery time will occur so that you look great in summer, and you will only need to wear compression stockings during the cooler months, making the initial recovery process much more comfortable.
