Acne scarring is an issue experienced by many people. While it has no direct physical health impact, it can have significant psychological effects. Many people, both male and female, who suffer from acne scarring experience embarrassment and self-consciousness, and it is an issue that affects people of all ages. Negative self-esteem due to acne scarring can be life-long and cause social withdrawal.
The good news is that there are effective treatments to alleviate acne scars, and they are just a phone call away.
What is Acne?
Acne (acne vulgaris) is a very common skin condition that, in most cases, arises during adolescence. More severe than just “having pimples”, acne results when sebaceous (oil) glands and hair follicles become blocked and inflammation occurs. The resulting red lesions and pus-filled blisters arise on the skin on areas where sebaceous glands are most active: the face, neck, chest, and back.
Acne is caused by an array of factors, including androgens (male hormones present in both pubescent boys and girls), blockage of sebaceous glands, genetics, stress, diet, and bacteria. It can also be caused by polycystic ovarian syndrome in girls and occupational exposure in certain industries.
Acne appears initially as blackheads and whiteheads on the skin. These, in turn, can develop into inflamed red lumps and pus-filled blisters. As inflammation increases, deeper nodules and cysts may develop in the skin, and it is these deeper lesions that cause scarring.
Acne scarring is the permanent indentation and textural change in the skin caused by acne. (It is not the temporary red/brown marking left initially after acne has occurred). The cysts that are formed by acne destroy the skin tissues and these damaged tissues are not replaced during the healing process.
Acne scarring will usually be indented on the face, yet raised on the back and chest. In most cases, the scars will be the same colour as the surrounding skin, though they can be discoloured.
How Can Acne Scars Be Treated?
Acne scar treatment comes in a variety of forms, some being much more effective than others. Some of these include treatment while the acne is active, such as prescription topical ointments, hormonal therapy, antibiotics, or systemic retinoid medication.
For people who have long-term acne scarring, treatments may include chemical peels, micro-dermabrasion (to remove dead skin cells), and other approaches. These have varying degrees of success.
By far, the most effective treatments for acne scarring are those offered by medical professionals at Crows Nest Cosmetic & Vein Clinic.
